Hi Parents,

As a former MOE teacher in Raffles Girls School & Dunman High School, there's still nothing more satisfying to me than helping my students fulfill their academic potential.

Over the past 10 years of teaching Integrated Programme (IP) Mathematics, I've seen students become more confident in their abilities because they can now cope well in school. Not to mention the joy on their faces when they achieve the results they want.

However, things were not all that smooth sailing from the start for some of them. As you may already know, not only is the pace in IP schools accelerated, the content and worked examples given in school's notes do not sufficiently prepare the students in doing the assignments, tests and Weighted Assessments. I observed that students generally often face these 3 common obstacles when it comes to IP Mathematics:

Overlooked Fundamentals

IP schools tend to focus on tougher concepts and assume that students are able to understand the 'simple' basics or expect them to grasp it by themselves. Without strong fundamentals, students may not be able to solve higher-order questions that can make all the difference in getting an A for their exams.

Rote learning doesn't work anymore
The learning strategy that worked for them during PSLE will not work anymore. It may even sabotage their grades as the IP system is about critical thinking, and often poses challenging questions that cannot be found in assessment books or 10-year series. Students will require a good grasp of the math concepts to excel.

Difficulty finding suitable tutor or tuition class
Tution classes typically cater to the Express stream, and IP students may feel neglected in such classes due to the differences in the syllabus. What's more, some IP questions may cross over to A level tutorial questions, so it's important for the tutor to have IP specific level of teaching knowledge.

Seeing these gaps, I've developed a framework that has helped my IP students

Complete their exam paper faster and with greater understanding

Reduce careless mistakes

Achieve an improvement of at least 10% in the next test

But don't take my word for it, here are some of our success stories

“Thank you Mr Tan for your patience & guidance. Under your tutorship, Yasmynn has gained a better understanding of the subject. You simplified the complicated Mathematical concepts, made it easy to digest while at the same time challenging. An added bonus is the A1 she got in her recent Sec 2 year end exam &being selected to represent her school in the upcoming Math Olympiad.”

Teacher Darrin is very patient and always explains thoroughly to Joshua whenever he faced difficulties in understanding. Upon my request, he was also willing to conduct his lesson 1 day earlier before Joshua and his schoolmates' math exam paper. His Sec 1 grades improved from C5 to A1 in 6 months! We are very appreciative of his dedication towards Joshua and his schoolmates. This has spurred Joshua on to work even harder for his Sec 2 streaming. Thank you so much!

Revealed: Success Behind the 3-Step Problem Solving Framework

Mindful Concept Application, Faster Calculation

The endless drilling on assessment books just doesn’t work anymore. Our class practices are specially chosen to pin-point the dos and don’ts when answering questions. By doing so, students learn not by rote memorization but through a genuine understanding of concepts. Once they learn to make connections and right applications, your child will be able to use the same concept and techniques across all other topics—increasing their problem-solving speed during exams.

1-to-1 Constructive Feedback

Without further explanation of exactly why an answer is wrong, it can be tough for students to know where or how to improve their work. This is why we make it a point to identify the weaknesses of each student and address them immediately. Students are encouraged to ask questions to bridge the gaps in understanding before applying the concepts in practice. We found that students who have gone through this process actually stop repeating the same mistakes by 90%! As a result, they breeze through most questions during exams.

Learning to Mastery

Applying facts and formulas learnt in school may only help in solving 50-60% of the questions in an exam. Students often get stuck at the higher order questions where equations get more complicated and there's a higher chance of making careless mistakes. What's more, these questions can hardly be found in assessment books or ten year series, even if students want to practice and prepare for them. Having taught IP students for over 10 years, we've the specific teaching materials and knowledge to guide students to achieve their As.

More Students Who Have Benefitted

"Caroline has benefitted through Mr Tan's creative and engaging methods. He simplifies math concepts like quadratic graphs and make math more interesting. He is dedicated, encouraging and approacable. Under his guidance, Caroline has excelled in her IP Maths in sec 2. A big thank you to Teacher Darrin!"

“Mathematics has been a huge obstacle to overcome and I found myself constantly struggling to understand the topics. Mr Tan's classes helped greatly in clarifying doubts regarding the subject, and especially allowed me to apply the knowledge accordingly. Besides that, classes are enjoyable and an effective environment for learning. Just a couple of weeks and a tremendous improvement could be seen in my test.”

Mr. Darrin Tan

Hi, I'm Darrin Tan and I'm the co-founder of Knowledge Trail Learning Centre (KTLC). Way back before starting KTLC in 2009, I graduated from NUS in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. I later obtained a Postgraduate in Education from NIE and joined MOE.

After a few years of teaching Mathematics and English in MOE schools, I started to pursue my Master of Science in Mathematics Education. Since then, I've taught in Yishun Junior College, Dunman High School and Raffles Girls' School.

Today, in my 20th year of teaching, my purpose remains the same: to deliver excellent results in Mathematics to my students and in doing so, bring out the best in all my students.
