Secondary 1 To 4 Maths & Additional Math Tuition – Ex-RGS/DHS Teacher Reveals The Proven Step-By-Step Framework To Improve Your Child Problem-Solving Abilities in Just 1 Lesson.
(We help IP Year 1 to 4 students too.)
Hi Parents,
As a former MOE teacher in Raffles Girls School and Dunman High School, with over 20 years of teaching experience, I noticed that for students, who are consistently scoring C/D for Math…
They face challenges when it comes to solving problem sums that require more than 5 working steps.
(This applies to students who are in the Integrated Programme (IP) too.)
What do I mean by that?
Here’s an example of an Additional Maths question for Secondary 3/4 students:
This question is technically just 1 sentence.
Yet, it requires many more steps of working!
Many students face challenges when it comes to solving multi-step problem sums as such questions require them to do the following with ease:
- 1Interpret and breakdown the question accurately, especially for long questions.
- 2Recognise the right topic being tested and recall the formulas quickly. (For example, "Is this asking me to find the Derivative or Discriminant?")
- 3Apply the formulas properly and write out the workings in the right sequence to reach the final answer correctly.
But why do many students face this challenge for multi-step questions?
With the current Covid pandemic, most teachers are rushing to complete the syllabus in time for the fast-approaching End of Year Exams. However, as you probably know, class time is limited in school. To make matters worse, the class size tends to be large at about 40 students on average.
Because of this, teachers only have time to mostly share the final answers and perhaps pick a few questions to quickly go through, so they may not have time to explain the logic and reason behind each step in detail.
As a result, many students lack the understanding on how to come up with the right sequence of steps quickly and easily to reach the correct answer.

This is the reason why I used my knowledge I gained from my Masters of Science in Mathematics Education and my experience as an ex-curriculum planner in school,
And created a systematic method to help my students carry out the 3 steps above easily for any multi-step question in the exam.
Because of this step-by-step framework, many of my students achieve a breakthrough and obtain significant improvements within 3 to 6 months and achieve their Distinction eventually, even though they may have been stuck scoring C/D when they first joined my centre.
But don't take my word for it, here are some of our success stories:

"Within a short period of time, Mr Tan has enabled me to understand A Maths concepts way better and clearer!
From MYE period to prelims, I had gained the confidence in tackling challenging questions that I have never imagined myself to be able to solve those questions.
Only with his encouragement I was able to jump from C5 in MYEs to A1 for both prelims and O levels.
Thank you Mr Tan!!!!”

“Thank you Mr Tan for teaching me patiently and for never giving up on me. Thank you for helping me improve my A Maths from a C6 in mid-year exams to an A1 in my O-Levels.
Mr Tan is a very passionate and patient teacher who never gives up on his students with any questions and only wants the best for them.”

“Thank you Mr Tan for your patience & guidance. Under your tutorship, Yasmynn has gained a better understanding of the subject. You simplified the complicated Mathematical concepts, made it easy to digest while at the same time challenging. An added bonus is the A1 she got in her recent Sec 2 year end exam & being selected to represent her school in the upcoming Math Olympiad.”

Teacher Darrin is very patient and always explains thoroughly to Joshua whenever he faced difficulties in understanding. Upon my request, he was also willing to conduct his lesson 1 day earlier before Joshua and his schoolmates' math exam paper. His Sec 1 grades improved from C5 to A1 in 6 months! We are very appreciative of his dedication towards Joshua and his schoolmates. This has spurred Joshua on to work even harder for his Sec 2 streaming. Thank you so much!

[Revealed] The Secret Behind My Students’ Success

[1] Mindful Concept Learning & Application, Faster Calculation
From my 20 years of teaching experience, I’ve noticed that in general, there are 3 stages of learning.
Here at Knowledge Trail, we use the K-U-A framework for every concept learnt.
Firstly, your child Knows the concept from me demonstrating the FULL working step by step using systematic problem solving techniques.
I’ll explain the logic behind every step, so your child will know why the steps are presented in a certain sequence and will have a strong foundation.
Secondly, I will ensure your child Understands by attempting a question on the board.
I’ll be able to see the gaps in his knowledge straight away and address them immediately. In my class, it’s ok to make mistakes and the students get to learn from each other and improve together.
Lastly, your child Applies his knowledge independently and meaningfully through homework practices.
The result?
Your child understands the logic behind the concept and each step of working.
With this understanding, he’ll be able to recognise the concept when it is being tested and adapt it to apply to the context of the question quickly in the exam, increasing his problem-solving speed.
This is how my students are able to come up with the right sequence of steps for any question fast and with ease, even when there are slight changes to the problem sum.
In fact, you’ll be able to see improvement within 6-7 lessons.
[2] Constructive 1-On-1 Feedback
Every student has different strengths and weaknesses.
In school, it’s tough for teachers to help everyone as they physically can’t give personalised attention and feedback to each and every student.
Because of this, many students have doubts/questions left unanswered, resulting in gaps in their understanding.
This is why I make it a point to identify the weaknesses of each student and address them immediately.
Students are encouraged to ask questions to bridge the gaps in understanding before applying the concepts in practice.
I found that students who have gone through this process actually stop repeating the same mistakes by 90%!
As a result, they breeze through most questions during exams.
[3] Learning To Mastery
Applying facts and formulas learnt in school may only help in solving 50-60% of the questions in an exam.
Students often get stuck at the higher order questions where the number of working steps gets even more complicated and there's a higher chance of making careless mistakes.
What's more, these questions can hardly be found in assessment books or ten year series, even if students want to practice and prepare for them.
Having taught for the past 20+ years, I have the specific teaching materials compiled from various schools plus past year papers as well as the expert knowledge to guide students to achieve their As.

Who Am I?

Mr. Darrin Tan
Mr. Darrin Tan
Hi, I'm Darrin Tan and I'm the co-founder of Knowledge Trail Learning Centre (KTLC). Way back before starting KTLC in 2009, I graduated from NUS in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. I later obtained a Postgraduate in Education from NIE and joined MOE.
After a few years of teaching Mathematics and English in MOE schools, I started to pursue my Master of Science in Mathematics Education. Since then, I've taught in Yishun Junior College, Dunman High School and Raffles Girls' School.
Today, in my 20th year of teaching, my purpose remains the same: to deliver excellent results in Mathematics to my students and in doing so, bring out the best in all my students.

FAQs
How big is the class?
Every school may teach different chapters at different times. Will your curriculum suitable for what my child is learning in school?
What if my child can’t make it for the lessons?
Are your tuition fees expensive?
Instead of mindlessly drilling practice after practice without any result, sign your child up for the free trial lesson and finally understand why he’s stuck scoring C/D for Maths.
While practice is important, what’s more crucial is to understand the concepts rather than memorising blindly as well as doing the right type of practice.
The drilling approach may also backfire and demoralise your child when he doesn’t see any improvement despite him putting in the effort, sabotaging your child’s chances of improving.
For a limited time, we’re offering a Free Trial Lesson for your child, where you will:
Limited spots are available, be sure to secure yours before we're all booked up.
*For P6 and Sec 4 students, early preparation is advised for optimal results. For the best experience, we recommend enrolling earlier in the year.
Thank you for your understanding =)
